Men About Town 1

Meet Five Henderson Movers & Shakers

John Barr, Findley Toyota Henderson

What made you choose your profession?

Coming from an entertainment background, I found a career that enabled me to work with the public.

What makes your job fulfilling?

Helping people (consumers and employees) succeed in their goals.

What inspires you?

Adversity and being the underdog. In my life, I’ve always found that I have a very competitive compulsion.

Favorite way to relax?

Watching sports or a great movie—historically set and correct movies.

Henderson’s best-kept secret?

Accessibility to escape to suburbia or nightlife/entertainment on LV Boulevard. District, Inspirada, playing in soccer league, taking walks around the neighborhood

What is your favorite book or movie?

I have many. “Gladiator,” “Cinderella Man,” “Darkest Hour”—any movie with great historical content and extremely well-directed cinematography. “Silence of the Lambs,” “Apocalypto.” (I’m) not a big reader.

Christopher Malandrino, Vegas Valley Views

What makes your job fulfilling?

It’s not really a job; it’s more a labor of love. I truly enjoy being part of transforming something into a place where people will enjoy their lives.

Favorite way to relax?

Bluewater sailing, but living in the desert, I don’t get many chances to do that. Second would be golf. I come from upstate New York where everything is green.

Something you should do once in your life?

Be daring, even if it scares you. Skydive, cliff jump, swim with sharks—you pick. I believe those moments are when people realize how precious life is.

Favorite movie?

“Gone with the Wind.” Yes, I said it. I would enjoy living in a time of majesty,  where honor was first in your thoughts and when a handshake still meant your word.

Peter W. DeBry, M.D., NV Eye Surgery

What inspires you?

I am energized by the possibilities of new techniques and opportunities to make the health care system better. Our practice is one of the first in the country to utilize an in-office surgery center for major eye surgeries. It has been a great experience developing the protocols and technology to allow patients to have procedures that they wouldn’t be able to afford in the standard surgery center setting. We also give away free surgery to patients who can’t afford cataract surgery.

Favorite way to relax?

I love the outdoors, hiking, camping and fly-fishing.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama. It focuses on how to apply some Buddhist principles along with Western psychology to learn skills necessary or beneficial to live a happy life.

Scott Muelrath, Henderson Chamber of Commerce

What makes your job fulfilling?

Serving as the conduit for our community, whether it’s business-to-business, connecting a nonprofit to a partner or assisting in the development of Henderson and beyond.

What inspires you?

People helping others.

Favorite way to relax?

A day of fly-fishing followed by a campfire.

Hendersons best-kept secret?

I enjoy working remotely at the coffee house at Nevada State College’s student union. It’s getting busier, though!

Something everyone should do once in their lives?

Travel to the place they want to go visit the most, and hopefully, there is some good fly-fishing there.

What is your favorite book?

I enjoy reading history and science fiction. The Liberation Trilogy by Rick Atkinson is at the top of my list.

Byron Brooks

What makes your job fulfilling?

My volunteer work as a mentor in the Veterans Treatment Court has been a passion of mine for the last five years. I find it fulfilling to be a part of a process that saves and changes the lives of so many people in our community.

What inspires you?

Besides my son, who inspires me to lead by example, people who have demonstrated the fortitude to reach their goals despite adversity.

Favorite way to relax?

It may sound strange but going to the gym and training hard relaxes me.

Henderson’s best-kept secret?

Our community engagement, along with the Parks and Recreation department.

Something everyone should do once in their lives?

Parachute from a perfectly good airplane.
